MIG: Choose the right welding alloy
Stainless Steel Welding - 308L is used to weld stainless base materials of similar composition including types 301, 302, 304 and 305. 309L is used when joining mild steel or low alloy steel to stainless steels, for joining dissimilar stainless steels such as 409 to itself or to 304L stainless, as well as for joining 309 base metals. 316L is used to weld stainless 316L and 316 base materials of similar composition or for high temperature service applications.
Mild Steel Welding - ER70S-2 Mild Steel cut lengths are for general purpose mild steel applications. Triple deoxidized, for use with moderate levels of mill scale. ER70S6 mild steel wire is for general purpose mild steel applications with tensile strength exceeding 70K psi. High levels of silicon and manganese deoxidizers and is best suited for welding on base metals with medium to high mill scale.
Self-Shielding Fluxed Cored - Ten gauge wire can be used in most carbon steel applications, and welds especially well on galvanized. E71T-GS flux cored mild steel wire is a self-shielded alloy that can be used for welding in all positions of most mild steels, indoor or outdoor applications, and up to ½ thickness.
